SCPC is short for single channel per carrier, a VSAT satellite transmission system that uses a separate carrier for each of its channels. SCPC is the simplest, most flexible way to connect two remote sites together.
SCPC is used for broadcast data and full-duplex audio/video communications. In an SCPC system, transmissions are sent to the satellite continuously on a single satellite carrier. The satellite signal is received at a single location, in the case of a point-to-point system, or at many locations in a broadcast system, providing hub less connectivity.
ASC can provide SCPC services through our own teleport facility on many satellites covering many different locations. These satellites include GE23 (Ku and C-Band), AsiaSat 4 (Ku-Band) and Intelsat 8 (C-Band). We have partnerships with many operators that can allow us to provide almost any service to suit your need.
The Primary advantage of SCPC services is that the architecture allows full connectivity between any sites in the network, while allowing incremental usage of the satellite transponder. Therefore you only use the bandwidth that you require, but allow for flexible expansion if required. As this is basically a point to point connection it does add an increase in security as data will not be combined with or flow through any other networks.
Disadvantages in using SCPC when compared with other techniques are that because it is only a single channel per carrier if you were connecting multiple remote VSAT’s together you would not be able to share bandwidth and you would also need multiple VSAT modems at the HUB Earth Station. As for the communication performance in this situation you are also increasing the latency of the link as data would have to do a double hop over the satellite. Generally you will also have and increase in cost of ground components like modems and of course the bandwidth cost as this is the users alone and the cost isn’t shared with other users.
